Do You Have a Plan B? You Should.

There’s no reward without risk. We’ve all heard this saying time and time again. But, when it comes down to it, most of us typically opt for the ‘safe’ option, the option we perceive as having minimal risk. As we make our decisions, we weigh what is called “the opportunity cost,” the cost of what you miss out on by choosing one option over the other. Oftentimes we find ourselves on the traditional route where we find comfort in understanding the path ahead. It makes it feel less risky. That begs the question though, does a ‘basic’ or ‘normal’ route actually hold less risk though? The answer is no.

There’s a path, an order, and rules…we are taught this throughout our lives. Two comes after one, walk in a single file line, do this before you can do that, college comes after high school, find a good job and climb the corporate ladder, and the list goes on…The truth is, this ‘basic’ route we grow up believing in has actually failed many individuals time and time again. Outward circumstances like the economy can turn on a dime disrupting everything. As a matter of fact, we are seeing this now. What was one of the strongest economies just weeks ago has done a complete 180 as we work to social distance. The result? Uncertainty. Businesses are closing their doors (hopefully temporarily), and many of us are out of what was steady work. The traditional route does not always hold the least amount of risk.

So, what then? We know that traditional is not always safe or risk-free, we know that entrepreneurship holds it’s fair share of risks as well. So what is the answer? How do we ensure we are on a path that has some safety but will yield the results we are looking for? Well, we can never ensure it, but we can spread out our risk. You know the old saying “don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” well that’s what we are referring to, here.

Plan B, everyone needs one and not the type that kicks in when plan A fails or disappears. Rather, we are talking about the type that is already up and running alongside plan A. The one that doesn’t take all your time and focus, rather, just a few hours a week. The one that if plan A goes away can take all of your time and yield greater results if you need it to. That’s the kind of plan B we are talking about here.

So, where do you find such an avenue? Believe it or not, plan B opportunities surround you and are commonly known as Side Hustles. The best part, it’s never too late to develop your plan B. As a matter of fact, B doesn’t always come after A, you can develop your plan B before you even know what your plan A is.

Let’s take some time and talk about requirements though. If we learn anything from our present situation it should be that our plan B has to be able to withstand certain circumstances and situations.

  • Flexibility. Your plan B must be flexible. It must allow you to work from wherever, whenever, and on your own terms. This means you can set your schedule, work from the location that makes sense to you (even if it involves staying in your home and away from others for a period of time), be a “stay at home” mom or dad, and so on.
  • Stability. It must have some stability. This is when a track record comes in handy. There are plenty of “ground floor,” new opportunities out there. And, plenty of those opportunities go away overnight. Choose an opportunity with a track record, and a history that shows stability.
  • Ownership. Plan B is about controlling your destiny rather than having someone bark orders at you. Be sure this opportunity gives you ownership and control over your success.
  • Mentorship. There is always room for improvement and growth in this life. With that, there is a time to receive help and a time to give help. Your plan B should offer you the opportunity to learn from those who have been successful. And, pass the gift of mentorship along after you have found your success.
  • Profitable. This is a bit of a no brainer but your effort has to be worth the return.
  • Meaningful. Last, but not least, it must be meaningful to you. It must align with your passions and the change you hope to make in this world. Let your plan B be the fuel for your soul and your passion.

There is no guaranteed path, there is no golden road to follow, but there is a way to spread your risk and to work smart. And you know what? There’s a way to make a significant difference in this world and have a lot of fun doing it.
