Get the Facts on Optimal Health

These days, it seems everyone and their influencer BFF is trying to tell you when, what, and how much you should eat. From meal prepping and intermittent fasting to all the fad diets out there, it can all be a little overwhelming.

While a lot of these diet plans and lifestyle guides can be challenging, confusing and quite frankly a little annoying, these guys are actually on to something. You really are what you eat. And it is particularly crucial that you make an active effort to eat right for your body’s sake. So maybe step away from that second helping of dessert or take it slow on the quarantine snacks.

Why? Well, we brought in an expert to explain.

The relationship between your gut, your food, and your body is deeper than mechanics. It is so much more than sorting and utilizing the good nutrients and eliminating waste. Rather, it’s more like a robust information system. You could actually say it’s like a web of information that is interconnected in many ways. Your gut, the system you rely on to process food, is the hub. It’s connected to many vital organs, including the brain, and has an impact on how these organs function.

We recently had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Jan Polson, DAOM, LAc on this subject and here is how she summarized the system…

“This gut-brain connection is called the gut-brain axis. We have neuroreceptors in our brain that send information to and receive information from the rest of the body to elicit chemical responses. The underpinning of chemical responses is information processing in the body. In other words, these chemicals don’t know what to do until they receive information.

We also have equal amounts of neurotransmitter receptors in the gut. When we eat food, the stretch and nutrient receptors in the gut speak to the brain. For example, when we start the day and break our fast with a nutritious whole food breakfast the brain receives a message that says, ‘wonderful nutrients are coming in. Get ready to receive them.’ And in turn, our brain works wonderfully for us.

Now the reverse is also true, say we break our fast with nothing but coffee. Your brain goes ‘oh there’s nothing coming in. I’m going to really have to start pulling from the body’s energy (⅓ of it to be exact) because I’m not getting what I need right now.’ With that, we really tax the rest of our organ systems and cause stress because nutrients are not coming in.”

This chain of events all starts at our core, in our gut. Let’s think of this in terms of the standard American diet which largely includes processed and packaged foods that include an array of ingredients we can’t even pronounce. Here’s what Dr. Jan Polson had to say on the subject…

“This food has been through a factory, it’s been modified, it’s been ground up, it’s been heated, and it’s been reduced. In other words, it’s not whole like it used to be before it was processed and packaged. When we eat these foods, we are giving our body a suboptimal product. It doesn’t have the vibration, the information or the vitality, that it once did as a whole food.

Look at it like a loaf of bread. In order to create a wonderful fluffy loaf, you require all of the ingredients. If you leave out the yeast, you will have a suboptimal product. Well, the same holds true for our bodies. If we feed them food composed of suboptimal nutrients or foods that lack nutrients, we will not have the end product that we want.”

This amazing system, our body as a whole, requires the proper fuel. It all starts with what we put in our mouth and the information system that starts in the gut takes over from there.
