Give Your Wellness Routine an Update with These Tips

With the new year just around the corner, many of us are filled with the motivation to give our health and wellness goals a fresh go. Maybe you are setting out to exercise regularly, or perhaps you are determined to finally kick a habit that hasn’t been serving your overall health and wellness.

No matter what your health and wellness goals are for the New Year, one of the best steps you can take to achieve them is creating a wellness routine.

But what is a wellness routine and how do you create one? Let’s take a look.

What is a Wellness Routine?

Before we talk about what a wellness routine is, it’s important to understand what exactly “wellness” means.

According to the Global Wellness Institute, the term “wellness” refers to the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.

Therefore, a wellness routine is a consistent process or schedule that is meant to help you achieve a state of holistic health. The keyword here is consistent. That means a wellness routine is more than just an occasional spa day, rather it’s about creating a regular and sustainable series of habits that will move you toward better overall health. It’s about providing yourself with some structure and organization to help you reach your wellness goals, whatever they may be.

The 3 Dimensions of Wellness

No single wellness routine will work for everyone. We are all different. We have different goals, different schedules, and different personalities. That’s why it’s important to create a routine that is tailored specifically to your goals and schedule. However, there are a few things that you’ll want to be sure to include in your routine, in some form or another.

  1. Nutrition. You’ve heard the saying “you are what you eat,” and in a lot of ways it is true. The nutrients you feed your body can impact everything from your gut health to the appearance of your skin. That’s why providing your body with proper nourishment is an important part of any wellness routine. How you choose to do this is up to you. Maybe you want to start your day with a protein shake. That’s great! Perhaps you would rather invest in superfood supplements to fill in the nutritional gaps in your diet. Also great! Whatever you choose to do, the goal here is to get plenty of those important nutrients to keep your body as healthy as possible.
  2. Physical Activity. A consistent exercise routine can do wonders for your overall health and wellness. However, for some people hitting the gym five days a week just isn’t feasible, and that’s okay. Your wellness routine doesn’t have to include multiple hours at the gym each day if you don’t want it to. In fact, it doesn’t even have to include what we traditionally think of as exercise. Instead, you can choose activities like taking a walk every morning, attending a yoga class a few days a week, or even something simple like doing some push-ups or squats before you crawl into bed. The goal is simply to find ways to regularly incorporate more movement into your day, whatever that may look like for you.
  3. Mental health. Finally, all-around wellness also involves taking care of your mental health. After all, what good is a healthy body if your mind is struggling? Incorporating activities that boost your mental health will ultimately leave you feeling better, but it can also help you stay motivated to continue working toward whatever goals you have set for yourself. When it comes to mental health, there are many activities you can take up such as meditation, journaling, reading, or having screen-free time, just to name a few. Just choose one or two activities that you enjoy doing to help relieve stress and keep your mind clear.

Tips for Building a Sustainable Wellness Routine

It is one thing to understand what a wellness routine is and what it should be comprised of. It is another entirely different challenge to come up with one and actually stick to it. But don’t worry. We’re here to help with a few tips to help you build a successful and sustainable wellness routine.

Work with Reasonably Achievable Goals

Your goals may be the most important thing to consider when you set out to create a wellness routine. After all, you are more likely to give up on goals that seem impossible to achieve given your time, resources, and abilities. Don’t get us wrong, your goals should challenge you, but they shouldn’t be too far out of reach. When you sit down and set your goals it’s important to keep in mind that you are in this for the long run. Creating healthy habits and achieving your desired results will take time, but with the right goals and some dedication, you can get there.

Be Kind to Yourself

It is almost inevitable that you will fall off the wagon at some point when it comes to trying out a new wellness routine, and that’s okay. The most important thing is that you give yourself grace. Forgive yourself for the slip instead of beating yourself up about it. Then evaluate your routine to see if you need to make any changes before you get back on the wagon to give it another try.

Listen to Your Body

When it comes to your health and wellness, your body will always tell you what it needs. All you have to do is be able to pick up on the clues. It will tell you when it needs more nutrients, when you need to work out more, and when your mind needs extra care. Most importantly, your body will tell you when you need to slow down and take a break. It’s your job to make sure you listen.

Set Up an Accountability System

Many of us have a hard time holding ourselves accountable to achieving our goals, which is why setting up an accountability system can be beneficial. After all, it’s a lot harder to justify skipping your daily workout when you know your friend will be asking you about it.  So whether you team up with a friend or relative or find an online community of people who are working toward similar goals, set up some kind of accountability system to help you stay on track as you create your new routine.

Do Your Research

A healthy lifestyle is easier to achieve if you know what you are doing. If you choose to follow a specific diet, you’ll want to make sure you do your research. That way, you can understand how it works, what the possible risks are, and how to make it a sustainable part of your lifestyle.

When it comes to working out, it is also important to take the time to understand all the different options you have from cardio to weight training. That way, you can choose exercises that will help you work toward your goals in a fun and effective way.

Have a Reward System

Good reward systems have long been proven to improve goal outcomes among professionals. The same principle can be applied to individual wellness goals. Reward yourself for being consistent, for reaching your goals, and perhaps most importantly, for whatever progress you make. These rewards can be anything from a trip to the movies to extra time for your favorite self-care activities
