Ladies, We’re Writing History

“You can’t have your cake and eat it too.” We’ve all heard the saying, and in many cases it holds true. But, not when it comes to today’s gig economy. Welcome to 2021. Things aren’t what they used to be and the way we live today is vastly different than it was 70 years, even 7 years ago. Ladies, it’s women’s history month, and right now, we are writing the next chapter. It’s time to have our cake and eat it too.

Remember When…

Remember when a woman’s sole job was a homemaker? It actually wasn’t all that long ago that women were responsible for cooking, cleaning, and caring for the children. But, we all know, things began to change and the 1820s gave women their first opportunity to earn a regular paycheck.

While it was becoming fairly common for unmarried women to work out of the home, it was not for married women. As a matter of fact, in 1900 less than five percent of married women had careers outside of the home (that’s only a little more than 100 years ago). Again, things changed as America entered into World War I. The men were off at war and women entered the workforce.

As time went on women continued to battle for their place in the workforce and prove their value, and it was a true battle as social pressure encouraged them to stay home. As we entered the 1960s women turned up the heat. They found education as an avenue to reenter the workforce, started taking interest in politics, and demanded equal pay for equal jobs (although that battle continues today).

Fast forward to the 2000s. Women were seen as powerful in the workplace. They had their foothold, they were using their minds and making a difference. They were having their cake, but were they eating it too?

Women were working full-time jobs, cooking, cleaning, caring for their children, and more. The problem, the to-do list was never-ending and there just wasn’t enough time in the day, week, or month for everything.

Introducing the Gig Economy

In 2009 something happened, we saw the birth of what we call the gig-economy (although gigs are much older than that). This economy is built around individuals who have taken a different route to generate an income, working for themselves, and creating their own career path. The gig economy has grown in popularity as people are choosing the path of an entrepreneur rather than following the guidelines and rules set to climb the corporate ladder.

This is where “eating it too” comes into play.

This gig economy has allowed women to be all things. To be successful in their careers, caring mothers who have time for their family, household chefs, and so on. What’s more, it allows 100% pay equality as in this economy you get out what you put in.

Ladies, this is where we get to have our cake and eat it too while making history. We don’t have to choose this or that and we don’t have to sacrifice. We’ve arrived at a time where we can generate meaningful income without being in an office from 9-5. Where we can set our schedules. Where we can be at our kid’s soccer games. Where we can sit down with the family for a meal at the end of the day. Where we choose what is best for us.

Your Gig Awaits

Today’s world allows space and opportunity to create whatever type of life you wish whether it be a combination of a gig and a traditional job, caring for the kids and executing a side hustle, taking advantage of multiple gigs, or dedicating your time to one business. You have options and we encourage you to get out there and experiment with and take advantage of them.

Follow your passion, express yourself through your work, and enjoy the freedom that the gig economy offers.
