The gig economy. Have you heard of it or been a part of it? Most likely the answer is yes, even if you don’t realize it! The gig economy is made up of a variety of gigs, careers, and job paths including being an Uber Driver, freelancing a skill, or even owning an Etsy shop. This economy is built around individuals who have taken a different route to generate an income, working for themselves, and creating their own career path. The gig economy has grown in popularity as people are choosing the path of an entrepreneur rather than following the guidelines and rules set to climb the corporate ladder.
As little as 10 years ago this gig economy hardly existed, if at all. So why exactly is this route so increasingly popular? Ask any individual who participates and you will get a variety of answers all with one underlying theme and that is freedom.
Having a gig rather than a 9-5 job allows you the freedom to choose your own schedule and routine. You set the goals and decide when and how you will achieve them. They can be as grand or small as you choose according to your lifestyle. There’s no denying that this type of freedom is extremely attractive. It can, however, sound a little bit intimidating as well.
Many of us have become accustomed to the security of our weekly paycheck from our standard jobs and there is nothing wrong with that. But, who says you can’t have both or execute both until you have the security and income your desire with your gig economy before fully committing? Or, better yet, who says you can’t participate in several different gigs?
That’s where the beauty of the gig economy is found, in the freedom and flexibility it provides. And, its ability to fit into several different lifestyles. Whether you’re a full-time mom who has a burning desire to follow a certain passion or a professional banker who is looking to generate a side income, the gig economy can fit into your life.
Having control and responsibility for your work and what you achieve makes it all worth it. Ownership is a sense of purpose in knowing that your accomplishments are truly yours and no one can take that from you. There is a big difference between striving for goals that you set versus striving for a goal that someone else determined for you.
Take New Earth Wellness Entrepreneur Liza Pedraza for example. In a recent interview, she described her New Earth gig as not only her business but her passion and life mission saying “this is my life mission and I will continue no matter how long it takes.” She went on to say, “this isn’t my job, it’s my business, but I’m not in business by myself […] I’m going to help hundreds of more people understand the value of these products and the impact they can have on overall health and wellness and, of course, quality of life. But, I’m not going to stop there.” Liza continued, “I’m going to mentor and coach those who are interested in operating their own wellness business with these amazing products.” Read the full story here.*
The bottom line, there is tremendous value in ownership, especially when your passion fuels your work. And, at that point, your work no longer feels like work. Rather, it’s just a part of your life’s mission.
Creating Your Niche
While gigs may be similar to one another, they are not identical. Just like each individual is unique so is their business and how they run it. We all have unique gifts and talents that allow us to put our own flair and personal touch on the gigs we pursue allowing us to find and serve our niche.
Your past experiences, skills, and passion will drive you and will ultimately attract a certain type of customer. And, for that customer, you will stand out from the crowd.
Take New Earth for example, where there are Wellness Entrepreneurs from multiple countries. This group is composed of medical doctors, hair stylists, business men and women, chiropractors, flight attendants, and the list goes on. They come from different backgrounds, speak different languages and all bring their own unique skill set and perspective to the business. Yes, they all participate in the same gig and are all passionate about wellness and helping others but no two businesses are alike.
Your Next Gig Awaits
While the traditional 9 to 5 offers a feeling of security, we all have to remember that nothing is guaranteed. More than ever, traditional jobs come and go. Today’s world allows space and opportunity to create whatever type of life you wish whether it be a combination of a gig and traditional job, caring for the kids and executing a side hustle, taking advantage of multiple gigs or dedicating your time to one business. You have options and we encourage you to get out there and experiment with and take advantage of them.
Follow your passion, express yourself through your work, and enjoy the freedom that the gig economy offers.
